Meandering Thoughts on G+ vs. Temporal Indifferent Media

G+ is an awesome tool but it does have disadvantages. I miss many interesting conversations because of time zones, blocked by the corporate machine, or just away for a few days. Like many, I’ve circled a lot of people because they occasionally post interesting points. The stream can be very chaotic and quickly bury stuff I’d like to read. I simply want to be able to easily find interesting conversations that occurred when I was not around.

I understand that the ideal social media consumer is always present. I will never fit that model. I’m going to have to start my own personal aggregation just to keep up. Aggregation is not the right word, I want to model it based on my own personal interests.

Currently, the G+ API limits my ability to do so. #1) I cannot pull my own circle information via the API. Considering I want to seed my algorithm with the people I like reading,it will require duplicating that information. #2) It is not possible to actually pull posts in my stream in any form. While I might be able to browse the actual G+ site today, I may be gone for a few days and want to easily find posts of interest when I get back Unless it is my post, it is not possible to easily browse the history of the topics, not people. #3) Back to limited posting, even if people have shared posts with me, I cannot see that via the API even if it is authorized to pull that information.

On the plus side, the API does allow extraction of public information. Once seeded, I should be able to find blog posts of interest based on the settings of folks I follow. I can also extract details on those who respond to the people that make public posts. A bit of relationship modelling and training and I can actually find better suggestions about people to follow based on my topic of interest.

The most important element is I want to read more posts — even if I’m not around. I don’t want my G+ stream full of ancient stuff; just the ability extract that data for my personal consumption. Perhaps even tie it back to relevant content in the past.

RATS! I’m sold.

Comments Off on RATS! I’m sold.

I’ve been following RATS! mostly due to the author, Uri Kurlianchik, being an irreverent personality I identify with. The artwork produced for the game thus far is absolutely amazing. So cool, it was the major point that sold me on moving up the contributor chain from a mere Friend of Rat to a larger perk level.

I’m happy to add this system to several I (will) own but may never run. Good people producing interesting stuff is a sufficient reason to back them.

Alright, gentlemen, let’s game.

Four days. That’s how long I have to wait to see good friends again and undertake as much gaming as we wish for a long weekend. Convergence is here yet again. The last one was a bit chaotic but this one just has a good vibe.

Everyone involved just wants to have a good time. The pattern of always trying to do something new is no longer present. Also absent is the need to jack cock around with scheduling for the sake of self importance. We can just be people having a good time without the need to one-up one another. No need for fanciful stories or chests drummed up derived from delusions of grandeur. Just people. Gaming. Cooking. Sipping It’s Only Vodka.

We may play a lot of RPGs or we may play a few. It really does not matter. The decision of what we play is out of my hands as it always has been. As long as we’re all having fun, the weekend will rock. When I fail, we’ll chuckle about it and move along. I will fail. I know that already.

I must tip my hat to my long time players. Wheels and Randall, you make games worth running. You arrive with no expectations, bring high energy, and drive games where you want them to be. The effort is noted and applauded.

Indie+ 2 will be held from October 29th through November 4th.

Indie+ is a virtual convention held completely within the bounds of Google+. The convention features panels, discussions, games and other activities all featuring independent game developers, publisher, authors, and artists.

The Indie+ 2 organizational process is rolling along nicely but still needs volunteers to run games, hold panel discussions, present products/art/etc, and general helpers (aka ninjas) to keep the convention running smoothly. For general information, check out the Indie+ website.

For more details, contact one of the following on G+:

Technical Services / General Information Chris Tregenza
Games Brent Newhall
Panels/Discussion/Ninja Wrangler Larry Moore
Guest & Trader Liaison Jacob Bouvier
Ninja Monkey Mark Hassman

The second incarnation of the convention promises to be better than the original. I look forward to seeing many of the great independent game creators during the week.

Before reading further, you will need to a) prepare a supply of drinks (non-intoxicating if you prefer) and b) be on Google+. This weekend, I want to run 2-3 sessions of DQ1 via Hangouts. I’ll be running it DM style if I can get 2-4 players.

Should you be interested, ping me on G+ or respond to the demo post.
