As I started to actually put together the content for the OSR Challenge, I found myself drawn back to cool characters and people I’ve played with in the past. I’m trying to avoid what I’ve done before. Still, I’m a sarcastic bastard at heart so I’ve decided to include some notable people along the way.

Some of them will be obvious. Some will be shadowy references. 25 adventures allows a lot of chances. For my old guys, keep an eye out, you are about to get highlighted in one way or another. If you can pick out all 25, I’ll buy you a beer.

(Oh, this is Post #200)

Gauntlet Toss Accepted: A September of Short Adventures

Asshat Paladins started a challenge to post 25 short adventures throughout the month of September. I decided to give a go even though I’m going to be out of the state for the first 5 days of the month. The essence of the challenge is to post an adventure every day except for one chosen day of the week.

September of Short Adventures

While I’d like to strictly follow the rules, my work flow is sporadic so I know I’ll have to change things up. First off, I won’t be picking a specific day off. Instead, I’ll try to post six per week as I get them finished. Likely, I’ll have to double up on some days to meet the 25 in the month. The total content outweighs the particular posting schedule.

I will likely follow the template posted on the challenge page for many of the adventures. Some may be slightly different depending on the content. I’m going to try to intermix several different system approaches. I have some ideas for the Old West (ala Boot Hill), some fantasy elements via Labyrinth Lord, and a couple of system-less ideas. I may also interject a couple for Top Secret (or equivalent) and one or more Cyberpunk ideas. Some systems may not fit some individuals perception of OSR but they work for me.

It should be fun. At last check, 16 different blogs have signed up for 25 adventures each. 400 unique adventure ideas is going to cover a lot of ground. I look forward to reading as many as I can.

Random Generation for the Random Esoteric Creature Generator

Generators squared. How very meta. The Crazy GM turned me onto James Edward Raggi IV’s The Random Esoteric Creature Generator from Goodman Games. The complexity of the results can be astonishing. More than you can capture in a utility.

My aim was to code the significant elements and leave out the vast majority of the explanations and additional variation. Why? You should own the book. If you don’t, the results will leave interpretation gaps. Go buy the book and you’ll understand the intricacies involved.

Mini Review

I’m not one to over analyse the products of other people. I liked the concept and the detail put into the work. I didn’t like every element. However, it is a great starting place to create unusual bad boys the characters cannot expect. The overall feel fits nicely with a number of my campaigns. Not to mention it must have interested me enough to code the massive diversity.

Oh yeah, my generator for the generator is available here.

If you haven’t visited the Dice Creator’s site. You should. Beautiful, imaginative, and splendid custom role playing die await your eyes.

His online store has many options. Don’t let that limit you. He’s constantly testing new ideas and is more than willing to work with you on a completely custom idea.

Look him up on Google+ as Abraham Neddermann.

Cool stuff. I might need some Wheels and Randall style GutShaker dice.

Chaos Monday – Could I, Should I….

Yep, it’s one of those days. Chasing my tail between projects and pondering even more.

Let’s start with the osr Challenge – A September of Short Adventures from Asshat Paladins. Could I do it? Maybe. I fear my time is against me. Should I do it? Yes. Forcing myself into a deadline brings out the stress and I perform better under stress than I do when allowed to twiddle my thumbs. The decision is black or white. I might get into it and wander off on another project and fail. I could do it. I have no doubts. I’ve been pondering ideas for over a week. Failure isn’t really a problem but I hate to sign up and then shrug it off. I’m leaning toward giving it a go. I could be #10.

Project #2 arrived based on the suggestion of Michael, aka TheCrazyGM. Essentially, its another random generator but crazier and more detailed than I’ve done to date. Additionally, its esoteric and fun. That’s why it appealed to both of us. In all honestly, I’ve already begun the code but I fear I’ll disappear into the code and forget the OSR Challenge. The new generator has no fixed deadline other than my self induced desire to get it done. It can wait a while. Unfortunately, I started already and know I won’t be happy until at least a beta version is available.

Couple all that with 8 days of being on vacation in September. Time is limited….

Pack Mule, Giant Powder and a jug of Old Rye

Just mentioning Boot Hill had me digging around for a few ideas for a few one-shot adventures. This photo paints an image. It wasn’t what I was looking for but I keep looking at it.

Mule of Many Things

Miner’s burro packed with mining equipment, including giant powder which was an early form of dynamite. Also shown is a box of nitro glycerin, old rye, gin, whiskey jug, frying pan, shovels, pots, rope, wheel barrow, saw and a miners pick. (1)

Everything you need for a bit of mining or an improvised mule explosive. The labels make me believe he’s more merchant than miner. Other than a cool picture, why would you have labels on everything you are carrying? What would you think when you came across this fellow and his load heading up the trail into the mountains?
